The Discovery Ethic

Why this guide exists

We believe the best adventures start with noticing, not with a countdown to the next find.

Partriddlegarden is an independent field guide for new and returning explorers. We write about geocaching, survey benchmarks, puzzle trails and city discovery routes, always with the same priorities: permission first, sensitivity to place second, the thrill of the find third.

Treasure hunting with clues is older than satellites. On Dartmoor in 1854, the guide James Perrott left a bottle at remote Cranmere Pool for visitors to leave their cards, the origin of letterboxing. Geocaching followed in 2000 when improved GPS accuracy let Dave Ulmer share coordinates for a container in Oregon. Both traditions depend on the goodwill of landowners and communities, and both thrive when participants act as guests.

How we work

  • Field-tested adviceOur guidance comes from walking routes in towns, woods and uplands across seasons.
  • No exact sensitive locationsWe never publish positions of fragile habitats, private spaces or protected features.
  • IndependentWe are not affiliated with Geocaching HQ (Groundspeak Inc.), Opencaching or any manufacturer, and we accept no paid placements.
  • Corrections welcomeRules and access arrangements change. If something is out of date, tell us and we will review it.

Our guides are general information. Always follow the rules of the listing service you use, local law and the instructions of landowners and rangers.
